Issues Made to Matter: Ethics and Leadership in the Voluntary Sector

Photo by Étienne Godiard on Unsplash - images shows a cyclist riding past charity adverts on a brick wall in London. The wall looks run down and tired and behind it, beautiful modern, imposing sky scrapers. The image reflects the challenges faced by charities and the disparity between the support the private sector has received during the pandemic and the limited support the voluntary sector has received

Recent months have provided significant challenges for leadership within the voluntary sector. Difficult decisions have had to be made and at times personal and organisational values have come under strain.

In this event, held in December 2020, we explored the sometimes-fraught relationship between leadership practice and ethics.

In particular, we considered the following themes:

  • How and in what way ethics runs through leadership
  • How ethics concerns both what we do and how we do it
  • How ethics can get lost in organisations and how we might make it matter

The seminar offered a space in which we could unearth, discuss, reflect on and respond to the ethical in our leadership practice.

For those of you who are new to the subject, we have provided you with a series of free learning resources to give you a flavour of the types of thinking involved.
