Abstract
In a world in which 38% of adults – 2 billion – are 'unbanked', mobile payments, credit profiles based on Big Data and telematics as a way of measuring risk are examples of the way in which digital innovation can improve financial inclusion across both developing and developed countries. However, in mature markets, increasing digitisation can leave large sections of the community excluded as firms shed physical and phone-based services and markets for credit and insurance become ever more finely segmented.

Jonquil Lowe will explore the contexts that make digital innovation a double-edged sword, drawing on her recent research into access to financial services, co-authored with Sharon Collard, and published by the Financial Conduct Authority.
