Learn to trust your academic ability

Philip smiles into the camera wearing a suit and tie

Phil, a Customer Service Engineer from Kildare, found himself at a pivotal moment in his career when he decided to pursue higher education once again. Having already completed a Diploma in Information Technology from The Open University (OU) and a Mechanical Engineering degree from another university, Phil returned to the OU to acquire a postgraduate qualification. Phil graduated with an OU MSC in Computing in October 2023 after studying all 6 modules over 36 months.

"I choose the OU because I had studied with them before," Phil explains. "I knew that any postgraduate course taken would need to be completed part-time and remotely."

Driven by personal goals, Phil embarked on a journey to attain a master's degree. "I wanted to complete a master’s degree as opposed to another bachelor’s degree course," he shares.

Phil's journey with the OU was not without its challenges, yet his determination never wavered. Juggling full-time work with his studies demanded immense discipline and organisation. "Evenings and weekends need to be put aside to ensure that module coursework and assignments are submitted on time," he reveals, illustrating the dedication required to succeed.

Despite facing unexpected hurdles, such as business trips coinciding with assignment deadlines, Phil remained steadfast in his commitment to his studies. "The work completed in the first 4 months of the course along with the feedback and availability of my assigned tutor ensured that I was successfully able to submit the fully completed assignment with several days to spare," he recalls, a testament to his resilience.

Throughout his academic journey, Phil found solace in the supportive community of tutors and fellow students. "The majority of modules completed had student WhatsApp groups associated with them," he explains, emphasising the importance of collaboration and mutual assistance.

Guided by invaluable advice from tutors and peers, Phil navigated through his coursework. "The best advice I received was to follow the module timetables and submit TMAs on or before the required dates," he shares, offering wisdom to future students embarking on a similar path.

Phil's family played an integral role in his success, offering unwavering encouragement throughout his studies. "My wife offered a lot of support when it came to helping with assignments," he acknowledges, grateful for their assistance.

With his OU MSc in Computing proudly in hand, Phil looks to the future. "After completing my MSc, I’m definitely more confident about trusting my ability to complete further academic courses in the future," he asserts.

Reflecting on his journey, Phil's proudest achievement lies not only in his academic accomplishments but in his ability to balance work, life, and study. "Actually, completing a three-year course whilst working (mostly) full time," he reflects, a testament to his perseverance and dedication.

As Phil sets his sights on future endeavours, one thing remains certain—his time with the OU has left an indelible mark on his life and career, paving the way for continued growth and success.
