Song of the Refugee

Imagine

The land of your fathers no longer your home

Each breath filled with terror, no fault of your own

Culture so strange, language a chore,

You’d give anything for a friend to walk though that door

Life and loves left far behind

Perhaps never to meet again in this lifetime

Salt in the wound, spoiled icing on a rotten cake

A sibilant hiss – “go back to where you come from, this space is not yours to take”

The pain of loss…it must be borne

Sustained through empty days and lonely nights, by memories alone.
