Giving birth during lockdown

Rita tells her story of giving birth in lockdown: “After trying several years finally we were welcoming our second child in June 2020. We had many challenges already because of our residence permit and then COVID-lockdown started. … When my midwife shared with me the news that I might have to go alone to the hospital for the delivery because of Covid, that made me so stressed and I was frightened because of the situation … but in the end, my partner was able to attend to witness the birth and that was wonderful”.

Sometimes, when we wake up happy in the morning and share something special with husband, these moments are precious in our lives. After trying several years, finally we are welcoming our second child in June 2020. We had many challenges already because of our staying permit and the COVID lockdown started. The first thing we faced finding midwife and hospital to give birth and regular check-ups. Because of government policy and help of friends, we successfully to go to hospital and midwife, but there was always nervousness and stress because of being undocumented and COVID. The lockdown rules made it even more challenging. I was not allowed to go to inside hospital and see the midwife with my husband. When my midwife share me the news even, maybe I have to go to hospital alone for the delivery because of COVID. That made me so stressed and I was frightened because of the situation. I'm not a religious person, although there's some power asking me to do something spiritual and to reduce my stress. I started to read bible, light candles and listening some spiritual talks. During these activities I was always praying “please God”. My husband during my delivery in the hospital. That was hard, not only my husband, one of our local friend was together to be with me during delivery because if you are undocumented, there has to be witness from local people to register the baby in the municipality and that has been done. We are enjoying our parenting, but there are always more challenges than happy moments during COVID.We have to think a hundred times to visit regular doctors, friends, and activities during COVID. We do so because we are afraid to be sick. We always nervous to go to hospital that force us to stay inside home most of time. Although our daughters want to go to outside and they need it but we can't help it. We were always optimistic towards, for secure and safe life and still, we are waiting for the situation. Before COVID, we were three people in our family. And now we are four people.
