eSTEeM Community Event
This is an introductory course to explain the basics of quantitative methods to inform research into teaching and learning. It will cover research design; different methodological approaches and their relative benefits and disadvantages; general principles rather than specific techniques and will also ask attendees to consider how to choose the most appropriate method(s) to use in their scholarship activities. The session will contain a mix of online presentation and discussion.

About the facilitator
Karen Vines joined the OU, straight after completing her PhD in Biostatistics. She started as the ‘Statistics Advisor for Research Students’, before taking up a position as a Lecturer and more recently a Senior Lecturer in Statistics. During her OU career Karen has worked on a number of statistics modules both in presentation and in production, looking to enhance the student experience wherever possible.
More specifically with respect to scholarship, Karen has been a member of the STEM Faculty Coordination Group for eSTEeM: the OU Centre for STEM Pedagogy, since 2014, and was the scholarship lead for the School of Mathematics and Statistics till 2019. In conjunction with Staff Tutor Chris Hughes, Karen has successfully led two significant eSTEeM scholarship projects.
