City of Glasgow College and Open University launch new degree programme

City of Glasgow College is piloting a new degree pathway in partnership with The Open University in Scotland (OU).

The first of its kind in Scotland the model offers a BA (Honours) Open degree consisting of history, social sciences and criminology within three years of study.

Combining the materials and expertise of The Open University, class delivery will take place at City of Glasgow College.

Tony Sweeney, Curriculum Head Social Science, City of Glasgow College, said:

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with The Open University to deliver this innovative degree model which is unique in Scotland. It provides a combination of social sciences with criminology and history, which is proving to be an increasingly popular choice and not currently offered at local universities.”

Susan Stewart, Director, The OU in Scotland, said:

“Our mission is to make higher education accessible to everyone and, as part of that, to encourage college students onto degree programmes. This gives graduates an edge when applying for jobs and we are very pleased to have partnered with City of Glasgow College to offer students something unique.”

A launch event for the degree course took place at the college’s awarding winning City campus in the heart of Glasgow’s Learning Quarter. Lecturers and prospective students heard presentations about the new programme and enjoyed a lecture and Q&A session by Steve Tombs, Professor in Criminology at the Open University.
