OU grad's birthday, graduation and proposal all in one day

In a joyful finale to The Open University’s 50th anniversary of its first-ever degree ceremony in Scotland, on Friday 25 October 2024, graduate Steven Bell, who was also celebrating his 34th birthday, took centre stage again. This time to propose to his partner of eight years, Clark Edgar.

From Glasgow, Steven completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geography and Environmental Science with The Open University (OU) after four years of study. A former member of the Armed Forces 3rd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS), he now works for ScottishPower.

The Open University's posts about the proposal went viral on social media (video below).

“Graduating on my birthday was already special, but proposing to Clark here makes it unforgettable,” said Steven.

Reflecting on his experience, Steven encourages others considering study with The Open University to "just go for it," noting the OU’s flexibility that allowed him to balance his studies, work, and personal life.

"The OU made it possible to achieve my goals while maintaining a good work-life balance,” he says. “If you’re thinking about it, don’t hesitate, there’s never a wrong time to invest in yourself and your future.”

I'm incredibly proud of Steven’s hard work, this day couldn't be more perfect.”

Clark, aged 31, from Edinburgh, was moved by the heartfelt moment, saying, “I’m incredibly proud of Steven’s hard work and dedication, this day couldn’t be more perfect.”

Steven was among 660 graduates who crossed the stage at the OU degree ceremony at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, marking 50 years since The Open University held its first degree ceremony in Scotland in 1974.

The OU remains committed to its founding pillars of inclusion and flexibility, with 170 (25%) of this year’s graduates who crossed the stage declaring a disability, 340 (50%) being the first in their families to pursue higher education, and 380 (60%) benefitting from part-time fee grants that covered their study costs.

When you think you're just going to pose for a photo with your new grad, but then…

He proposes!

A whirlwind day for myself to plan.

Shocked, very shocked, yeah. I didn’t expect that at all. I really did not expect that, anyway, but I’m so happy, love it, and the right ring!

The selection was tricky!

It was emotional the day anyway, and this is just, yeah, it’s just topped it.

It’s a four year journey, on my birthday, the end of the four year journey, and the next chapter begins.

Yeah.
