OECD Water Governance Initiative

On the 10th anniversary of establishing the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Principles of Water Governance, Kevin Collins attended the 20th meeting of the OECD Water Governance Initiative (WGI) at the OECD HQ in Paris 28-29th January. Over 150+ WGI members convened in person and online.

OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann outlined projected water challenges associated with climate change and urban growth. He encouraged governments at all levels to make sound public investments and mobilise new forms of finance; ensure effective regulatory and multi-level governance; and connect water, climate and biodiversity policies as part of a systems approach.

During two dedicated sessions, WGI members discussed the WGI Programme of Work 2025-2027 in depth, under the overarching theme of “system re-thinking”. The Programme will focus on two pillars of work: (i) a Global Stocktake of the OECD Principles on Water Governance, and (ii) a systems approach to water and climate adaptation relying on the blue economy, the circular economy, and nature and biodiversity.
