Abstract

Careers Services are part of an HE landscape where the collection, analysis and use of data is central to all aspects of the student journey. The research explores the opportunities and challenges this presents for Careers Services, particularly in engaging and supporting students from underrepresented groups. A qualitative approach was adopted with semi-structured interviews conducted with Careers Service leaders at five UK universities. The data was analysed thematically with four key themes emerging: ‘pushed into the light’, ‘taking back the narrative’, ‘pulled into shape’, and ‘keeping pace with the data’.

The findings demonstrate the role and visibility of the Careers Services interviewed had changed, and that the datafication of the sector, and how Career Services have responded to it, were key drivers in this shift. This has created both opportunities and challenges in engaging students from underrepresented groups.
