Synergetic, ‘win-win’ solutions are a means of creating ‘more’ with the same set of resources. This presentation argues that the development of synergies is a core principle of positive change, whether at the psychological level, the interpersonal level, or the inter-national level. The presentation sets out common principles of positive change across these different levels of organization, with a view to developing common frameworks for understanding positive change. These principles include the development of trust, prizing difference and diversity, and being assertive.

When people are detained in secure conditions, phenomena associated with their offending may continue to manifest. There are many ways in which this may happen. This session will explore some of these ways, examining the conscious and unconscious processes at play, which may or may not be recognised or appreciated. I will use a paradigm which integrates forensic psychotherapy and group analysis and consider how professionals can be helpfully supported to negotiate such complex settings.
