Your first week

Objective setting

At the Open University we understand that setting clear objectives is key to achieving great performance outcomes. During your Welcome meeting with your new line manager you will have discussed the University's mission and strategic objectives. These objectives will form the basis for the development of your personal objectives. Your line manager will guide you through an objective setting process that will embed personalised and tangible goals for you to work towards in the following weeks and months. These objectives are of great importance as they form the basis for your performance review.

Meeting with your Buddy

The University is keen to put new starters in touch with a 'buddy' colleague within the first few weeks of a new appointment. The buddy is a member of staff that has volunteered to support you and help you settle in to work and life at the University. The buddy relationship can be invaluable when it comes to answering informal questions you have on the University and its policies. The buddy may be from your department or area but if applicable they may be from a different area of the University.

Accessing and Training on Core University Systems

It is important to equip you with the necessary tools you need to perform your role. Within your Local Welcome Pack will be time to access the training to do this. This will help you to begin to grow and develop your skill sets and knowledge base, becoming ready to undertake a regular workload.
