Your first day

Personal Welcome with Line Manager

One of the most important activities on your first day will be a meeting with your new line manager. This is a great opportunity to introduce yourself and get to know one another. Your manager will be able to give you an introduction that will cover:

  •  Who are we and how do we work? - An overview of the mission, vision and goals of the Open University
  •  A background and overview of the Unit you will be joining and how your department functions to support the wider University
  •  Further information on roles and responsibilities for your new appointment
  •  An explanation of reporting lines within your new department
  •  Ways of working and communication methods

During this meeting you will be guided through the timetable in your Welcome Pack and you can ask any questions you have about the upcoming activities and meetings.

Colleague Introductions

Throughout your first few days you will have introductions to your team members this may be held as a series of one-to-one meetings or as part of a team meeting (again this could be in-person or remote). Your colleagues will be able to answer questions you may have about the team and key relationships they have across the University. This is a good opportunity to ask questions about the team and University in general.

Welcome Checklist

To make sure we cover everything by using our Welcome Checklist; a clear overview of what to expect in the first day and week and where you can find resources, information and support.  Such as:
