The Open University’s strong position as a global leader in Development Studies is confirmed by the newly published Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 results.
Its research environment for Development Studies was rated 100% world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*), for its vitality and sustainability, ranking joint second nationally.
And 100% of its impact cases for Development Studies were recognised as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) for their reach and significance beyond academia.
Overall, 86% of its Development Studies submission was rated as ‘world leading’ (4*) or internationally excellent’ (3*).
The REF 2021 also found that over three-quarters (76%) of its submitted research outputs were rated world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) for their originality, significance, and rigour.
Professor Theo Papaioannou, REF 2021 Strategy Chair for International Development at the Open University, said these results are ‘excellent’.
"REF2021 recognised the success of our long-term strategy of inclusion and our coherent and vibrant research environment.
“Our submission included colleagues from Development Policy and Practice, Economics, Geography and STEM, reflecting our impressive interdisciplinary nature."
The REF is an expert review process which aims to secure the continuation of a world-class, dynamic and responsive research base across the full academic spectrum within UK higher education. REF 2021 recognises 82% of Open University research impact across all disciplines as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent.’ See full story.
