Prize for paper on informal multicultural spaces

A journal paper co-authored by International Development and Inclusive Innovation Director Professor Giles Mohan, has won a 2020 SAGE prize for Innovation and Excellence in Sociology.

Entitled Community and Conviviality? Informal Social Life in Multicultural Places, the paper draws on data from the ESRC-funded Living Multiculture project, which focused on how new spaces of multiculture may be emerging in towns and cities which draw on the practices of everyday interaction, rather than top-down policies or institutionalised diversity.

The prize-winning paper was co-authored by the project’s investigators Dr Sarah Neal, University of Surrey; Emeritus Professor Allan Cochrane in the Open University’s School of Social Sciences & Global Studies; Dr Katy Bennett, University of Leicester; and Professor Mohan; and published in 2018 in Sociology, the flagship journal of the British Sociological Association (BSA).

The SAGE Prize is awarded annually to one paper in each of the BSA's four prestigious journals, judged to represent innovation or excellence in the field of sociology.
