Brexit and beyond

On the 27 June, The Open University in Ireland hosted a panel discussion called ‘Brexit and beyond' in the National Library of Ireland.

The event was chaired by John Addy, Assistant Director of The Open University in Ireland and the panel included Professor David Phinnemore, Professor of European Politics and Dean of Education in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen's University, Belfast, Dr Leslie Budd, Reader in Social Enterprise at The Open University Business School, Jer Bergin, National Treasurer and Returning Officer of the Irish Farmers' Association and Dr Mary C. Murphy, lecturer in Politics in the Department of Government, University College Cork.

Each speaker considered the implications of Brexit on the island of Ireland. The audience were able to hear a range of perspectives and thoughts on key issues such as politics, trade, markets, peace and not least the border.

After the panel shared their viewpoints the engaged audience was able to ask questions in what was an interesting session. Questions ranged from the border, the unique circumstances on the island of Ireland, agri-food trading relationships and the role that political parties play in the Brexit deal.

The audience ranged from sector stakeholders, local politicians, students, alumni and the general public.
