Paul, a 47-year-old from Mallow, Cork, has proudly completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Technology Management with The Open University (OU), marking a significant milestone in his career.  As the Managing Director and Innovation Consultant of his own business, Paul decided to pursue his MBA during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.

Despite his determination, Paul faced some initial anxieties. He last studied 25 years ago when he earned a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science. “Being dyslexic and having not studied since 1999, I was very nervous about starting study again, but I needn’t have worried.”

However, The Open University’s expertise in distance learning and the support from tutors helped him manage his workload and overcome any initial doubtsReflecting on his experience, Paul saysI always had an itch to do an MBA and admired anyone who had finished one. I also wanted academic validation of the entrepreneurial journey I have been on for the last 14 years.”

Juggling work, study, and personal life, Paul maintained a strict study schedule, three nights a week and Saturday mornings, often extending to Sundays when important assignments like TMAs (Tutor Marked Assignments) and EMAs (End of Module Assignments) were due.  His dedication paid off when he proudly achieved a distinction for his dissertation.

Paul’s MBA has not only boosted his academic confidence but also empowered him from a business perspectiveHe credits the OU for helping him build the foundation he needs to grow his company and adapt to the ever-changing business landscape. “It has given me the confidence to start my own company,” he said“I loved and learned every minute of study with the OUThe institution makes education accessible to all, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

One of the highlights of his MBA experience was meeting fellow students. “Meeting students at the two in-person residential schools was my highlight. Starting the MBA journey in 2021, it wasn’t until 2023 and 2024 that I had the chance to meet my peers in person.”

With his newfound confidence and expertise, he is ready to embark on the next chapter of his entrepreneurial journey, equipped with the knowledge and resilience he gained through his OU MBA.  Looking forward, he hopes to continue growing his business and applying the knowledge and skills gained through his MBA.
