Education is not just for the young

Karen from Limerick is a fulltime carer for her 97-year-old mother. Despite her demanding responsibilities, she found the determination to embark on a student journey with The Open University (OU). Karen graduated with an OU BSc in Psychology in October 2023.

"The ability to study online was a game-changer for me," Karen reflects. "I researched it online and also spoke to people who had studied with the OU."

Her decision to pursue higher education wasn't just about a career change. "I was hoping to change my career, and it was also a personal goal of mine to attain a degree."

Navigating through challenging times, Karen found solace in the supportive network of fellow students and dedicated OU tutors. Recalling the invaluable support that kept her going, Karen says she was impressed by how helpful fellow students could be when she was struggling with difficult assignments.

Balancing studies with her caregiving duties proved to be a daunting task, but Karen faced it head-on. "It was tough! I studied when the kids were at school, and also very late at night when everyone else in the house was sleeping."

Yet, with resilience and unwavering determination, Karen not only completed her undergraduate studies but also decided to pursue an MA in Psychology, a testament to her newfound confidence in her academic abilities.

Reflecting on her journey, Karen expresses her admiration for the OU's teaching materials and the unwavering support she received. "I took a 25-year break from my studies. It is good to be learning new information," she shares, appreciating the opportunity to expand her knowledge.

For those considering OU study, Karen offers words of encouragement, urging them to seize the opportunity for personal and professional growth. "I would say go for it," she beams. "It’s an amazing opportunity to study from home when it is not feasible to go to a bricks and mortar university."

Karen's journey wasn't without sacrifices, but the rewards were worth the effort. "Receiving a first-class honour, I put blood sweat and tears into my studies with the OU over the last six years and my grades reflected this," she reminisces, proud of her achievements.

As she looks to the future, Karen remains determined to pursue her dreams, fuelled by the belief that education knows no age limits. "It compounded my belief that everything is possible, if you work hard enough and that education is not just for the young," she affirms, a beacon of inspiration for learners of all ages.

In her downtime, Karen finds joy in simple pleasures—walking her dogs, savouring meals at her favourite restaurants, and cherishing moments with loved ones. Though her journey with the OU had its challenges, Karen has emerged victorious, a shining example of resilience and determination.
