Subscribe to Open (S2O)

Subscribe to Open (S2O) is a model of Open Access publishing that academic institutions can participate in by paying a subscription fee. The institution's fee covers publication costs, so there are no charges for authors or readers.

In S2O, a publisher has a subscription income target. If the target is reached in any given year (because enough institutions are paying a subscription), the content for that year will be published as Open Access under a Creative Commons licence. If the income target is not reached, only the institutions that paid a subscription will have access and authors will have the option to publish Green Open Access.
