In celebration of the OU’s 50th anniversary year you have the chance to win a free ticket to a Masterclass in Writing Fiction, by writing a story or poem in a social media post of no more than 50 words. 
This Masterclass is part of The OU 50th Anniversary Series at the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2019.

How do you go about creating authentic characters? Are you unsure what approach to take or what tools to employ to create fully rounded and believable beings? Many writers struggle with turning their observations into captivating prose.

Join prize-winning author, former OU Arts Faculty staff member and current Edinburgh Napier University lecturer Daniel Shand, as he delivers a masterclass guiding you through the techniques that will help you get to know your characters and bring them to life. 
This Masterclass is sold out. The free tickets on offer with this competition are normally valued at £35.00 or £30.00 concession.

The small print: 
  • The entry deadline is 5.00pm on Wednesday 31 July 2019. Entries received after that time will not be counted. 
  • You can submit as many entries as you wish and they can be about any subject. 
  • Entries that are longer than 50 words, do not use the correct hashtag, or contain inappropriate or offensive language, will not be considered.
  • This opportunity is available via social media only; entries can only be submitted by Twitter or Facebook or LinkedIn (not Instagram) and must use #OU50Scot
  • The competition is open to persons aged 16 and over who live in Scotland. Students of the OU are eligible to enter the competition. Employees of the OU are not eligible to enter the competition.
  • Each winner will be awarded with one ticket to the Masterclass. There will be two winners in total. 
  • Winners will be notified on Monday 5 August 2019 by direct message, via the social media platform they used to submit the entry. 
  • All winners will be asked to send their full name and email address to, for correspondence about ticket collection. This information will be held in line with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) policy. 
  • Tickets are non-transferable and are to be used by the entrants themselves. Prizes are as stated and there is no alternative. 
  • The entries will be judged by Natalie Lewis, Senior Faculty Manager, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at the OU in Scotland, who herself has completed the OU modules Creative Writing and Advanced Creative Writing.
  • Entrants into the competition shall be deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions and to be able to attend the Masterclass
