1. Rebel leader Mekatilili is shown leading a baraza (meeting) in this 1983 oil painting by Kenyan writer, painter and activist Zarina Patel. The Tana River is on the right, with a group of Giriama people making arrows and stringing bows. "She is urging the people to resist", explains Zarina.
