ORDO: looking after your data

Approval for publication

Once uploaded into ORDO your data goes into a curation queue. Library staff will check datasets in the following ways:

  • Can all files be opened?
  • Is the metadata accurate?
  • Do the files appear to contain any personal sensitive information?
  • Are there any other likely constraints on publication?

If staff have any queries regarding your dataset they will get in touch to resolve them, or with specific advice to help you further prepare data for publishing.

Once outstanding queries are resolved, Library staff will approve your data for publishing. ORDO will notify you of this both within the system when you next log in, and by email. You can also check the publication status of your research datasets from your 'My data' page.

Dissemination after publication

Once published, it's up to you to maximise the potential for impact by publicising your research dataset. You can do this in a number of ways:

  • Use the digital object identifier (DOI) provided on publication to link research datasets to your published research papers
  • Use the share option from the dataset details screen to share via Twitter, Facebook and Linked in. You can share, cite or embed datasets on these platforms; help with this is available on the ORDO (Figshare) support site.
  • Link your ORDO account to your ORCID researcher profile.

ORCIDs are unique identifiers that can be used to identify individual researchers and their research outputs across platforms: increasingly research funders and publishers require them for proposals and articles submitted for publication.

You can find out more, and sign up for an ORCID, on the ORCID information page. Once signed up for an ORCID, you can link your ORDO account to your ORCID to ensure all your research datasets are displayed there. There is more help on how to do this on the ORDO (Figshare) support site.

Long term curation

Once published within ORDO, research datasets will be retained for as long as research funders require, or as long as deemed to be of value to the wider community. Where not reviewed already, items stored for ten years will be reviewed to assess their continuing value.

The Library research support team will try to ensure continued readability and accessibility of stored files. Where necessary and practical, items in obsolete file formats will be migrated to newer formats while retaining the original files.

There is more detail on curation actions and responsibilities in the Open Research Data Online (ORDO): Archival Research Data Management Policies (pdf).
