The School of Computing & Communications brings together a diverse academic community who are passionate about delivering world-leading teaching, research and scholarship in computing and communications. Through these activities, we aim to empower our students, their employers and society in general to develop and use digital technologies to solve the problems of the future.

Dr. Robin Laney, Head of School

John Woodthorpe, Head of School

The school has around 80 academic and research staff and 30 research students. Most of them are at the main campus in Milton Keynes, with others in various locations throughout the UK. We have many associate lecturing staff across the UK, supporting our undergraduate and masters students.

We offer degrees and modules in a range of topics, including programming, social implications of computing, networking, software engineering, human-computer interaction, and many others. Our Industrial Advisory Board ensures that these qualifications are up-to-date and relevant to the current market.

We are committed to equality and diversity and have been awarded the Athena SWAN Silver award, recognising our contribution to addressing the under-representation of women in STEM.

Meet some of our Academics

Helen Sharp, Professor of Software Engineering takes us behind the scenes in the OU’s IT department to talk about her research into software development. She works with industry partners to identify some of the challenges in software design, both for the software developers and end users.

Arosha Bandara and his colleagues work in cyber security and human behaviour - investigating ways of building security and privacy into the systems that are an integral part of our everyday lives. He demonstrates the Privacy Band, a device developed at the OU to help people manage their privacy more effectively in a world that combines cyber-physical-social systems.
