The Open University Validation Partnerships (OUVP) was established in 1992 to enable The OU to validate programmes for institutions that do not have their own degree awarding powers or that want to offer OU validated awards in addition to their own. OUVP works with Institutions in the UK and abroad including the UK Armed Forces Military Aviation Academy (UKAF MAA).
The Open University has worked with the Royal Navy Air Service since 2001 on the development of the Fleet Air Arm Military Aviation Academy as a higher education institution. In 2013, the organisation became bipartite, when the Army Air Corps joined and had their pilot training accredited. As of September 2020, the Royal Air Force joined the partnership and the new organisation, UK Armed Forces Military Aviation Academy (UKAF MAA) was formed.
The UKAF MAA successfully combines military aircrew or air traffic controller training and education towards OU-validated qualifications which are a mix of classroom learning (Ground School), actual flying, simulated flying and some computer-based training.
