Services for students

The library webpages are here to help you develop the skills you need to study successfully. Here you will be able to access a world-class collection of online resources and digital skills training to develop skills valued by employers.

New Students

Welcome to the Open University Library. The Library will be key to your academic success as you progress through your studies and staff are here to support you every step of the way. You’ll be able to access the majority of the Library’s resources online. This includes material you’ll need to read for your studies, such as eBooks and journal articles, as well as training.

See our handy Getting Started Guide for further information.

Online resources

The majority of the Library’s collection of books, journals and other research material is available online through Library Search and the list of research databases. There are research guides by subject area and type of material. For information on finding eBooks, eJournals and other resources for your study, check the Library Resources page.

Visiting other libraries

There may be times during your studies when it would be beneficial to visit another academic library that is located near to you. The Library is a member of the SCONUL access scheme, which allows students to use the collections of other academic libraries. Most UK university libraries participate in the scheme and you are welcome to apply to become a SCONUL member to use this resource.

Services for disabled users

The Library provides support for making research materials accessible at a distance by providing guidance on searching databases, as well as access to SensusAccess, which converts inaccessible files into different formats. For specific requirements, you can get in touch with the Library Helpdesk, We have more information about the resources and services available to disabled students at a distance

Further help

There is 24/7 access to help on using the Library, including finding, using and referencing materials. You can access online guides, training and contact the Library for further help.
