The following information introduces our offer in this curriculum area, and is not exhaustive. It is organised into two sections: courses, modules and qualifications, and free materials on OpenLearn. 

Courses, modules and qualifications

Our large range of science courses at undergraduate level includes many modules that you may study as standalone courses to support professional learning. 

The OU is also offering courses to directly address the shortage of chemistry-expert and physics-expert teachers.  The courses enable learners to develop their knowledge of these subjects to be able to teach them: 

• The Professional Certificate in Chemistry enhances knowledge of the main branches of chemistry and builds investigative and practical skills
• In Physical Sciences we offer two undergraduate level certificates, one in Astronomy and Planetary Science and one in Physics

If you intend to use these modules to support entry to Initial Teacher Education or to expand your General Teaching Council for Scotland registration to teach a different subject, please check the most recent GTCS rules and regulations about level of study and amount of study needed.
